Can You Repair the Rock Chip in Your Windshield?

Look at the chip's placement first. It cannot be fixed if it is in the driver's line of sight. It is possible to repair damage that is less than 6 inches from the edge of the glass, but it is more probable that the repair will fail. Glass in the windshield's outside perimeter is under "severe stress." Since this is the point of contact with the body of the car, it is more likely to withstand pressure and stress from changes in temperature, road vibration, and body torque.

Next, consider the size, taking into account any cracks that extend from the impact location. Is the break a dime, nickel, or quarter in size? In that case, it can be fixed. Alternatively stated, if the entire break is smaller than 1.25 inches in length and has cracks extending from it, it is repairable.

Bull-eyes that are too big to fix (bigger than a 50-cent piece) cannot be fixed. It cannot be repaired if the crack is the proper size but the glass is entirely crushed in the middle. Crushed glass cannot be put back together. Typically, cracked windshields cannot be repaired since the structural integrity has been damaged.

Types of Chips

Bulls-eye, star, and combination breaks caused by rock chips can be repaired. The size of the rock chip must be less than 1.25 inches (the size of a fifty-cent piece). Repairing chips and cracks bigger than a fifty cent piece is not advised. In this situation, repairability is case-by-case and has no assurance of success.
